Urban Archaeological Park of Ancient Volcei; Norman Angevin Castle, Baths, Roman Buildings and Rock Complex - Buccino (SA) - Campania

Located in the picturesque Valle del Sele and founded on the ancient city of Volcei, the municipality of Buccino stands on a hill between the Tanagro and Platano rivers, offering a breathtaking view of the valley below. Its history is rich and fascinating, with the ancient ruins of Volcei harmoniously blending with the medieval urban fabric of the historic center.

One of the main attractions is the Urban Archaeological Park. This ambitious project has allowed the recovery and preservation of the remains of ancient Volcei directly within the inhabited center. Here, visitors can admire ancient thermal mosaics and the remains of the pagan temple, offering a journey into the past that seamlessly merges with the village's modern life.

The Museum of the Hermits of St. Augustine tells the history of Buccino from the Bronze Age to Romanization, exhibiting archaeological artifacts that testify to the daily life of the ancient inhabitants of Volcei. A particularly evocative room reconstructs the ancient banquet hall with an ancient mosaic made of tesserae, the oldest in Italy, adorned with a six-pointed star and stylized dolphins.

The medieval Castle dominates the town of Buccino, bearing witness to the importance of defense in the Middle Ages against Saracen raids. Built in the 12th century, the castle is characterized by a massive square tower and a defensive wall protected by circular towers.

The rock complex via Egito is an ancient rock settlement dating back to the 5th-7th century AD, similar to the famous Sassi of Matera. Caves carved into the rock that once housed Byzantine hermits offer a unique immersion into the history and spirituality of those times.

With its historical landmarks, breathtaking landscapes, and hiking opportunities, Buccino is an ideal destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the beauty and culture of the Campania region.
