In the heart of Salerno stands the majestic Church of San Giorgio, a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Its origins date back to the 8th century, when it was built on ancient foundations that traced back to even earlier times, dedicated to the Eastern saint.
Upon passing through the modest facade on Via Duomo, visitors are greeted by a profusion of frescoes and decorations that make the Church of San Giorgio the most beautiful Baroque church in Salerno. The Solimena frescoes, masters of the Baroque art, are among the main attractions of this church, which has transformed over the centuries but has always retained its charm and beauty.
The interior of the church is a feast for the eyes: a single nave covered by a pointed barrel vault, with richly decorated side chapels, a rectangular transept surmounted by a dome, and a square space behind the main altar. Among the most significant works of art inside the church are the 1523 altarpiece by Andrea Sabatini depicting the Virgin and Child with saints Augustine, Scholastica, Benedict, and an evangelist, the Solimena frescoes from the 17th century, and the golden stuccoes made by the artisan Nicola d'Acunto.
Notable is also the magnificent 17th-century polychrome marble altar with the statue of Saint George slaying the dragon, attributed to the Carrara masters Pietro and Bartolomeo Ghetti, and the series of paintings by Giovanni Battista Lama, a pupil of Paolo de Matteis, dating back to the early 1700s.
For art and history enthusiasts, a visit to the Church of San Giorgio represents a journey through time and the beauty of Baroque art, an unforgettable experience for those in Salerno in search of hidden and evocative treasures.
