At the foothills of the majestic Alburni mountains lies the charming village of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella.

Origin of the name

The town's name derives from the merger of Fasanella, an ancient city located about 3 km from the current settlement and destroyed in 1246 by Frederick II of Swabia, and Sant'Angelo, one of its hamlets.

UNESCO heritage

The "treasures" of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella include the Antece, an extraordinary rock sculpture depicting an ancient warrior dating back to the 4th century BC, discovered in Costa Palomba, and the suggestive Grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel, a sacred place used by a Benedictine religious community since the 11th century.

Religious buildings

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose origins date back to the 14th century and a façade adorned with a marble portal decorated with symbolic representations, represents a valuable historical and artistic heritage. The nearby Convent of San Francesco and dell'Annunziata, enriched with statues, paintings, and canvases, is another must-visit stop to immerse oneself in the religious history of Sant'Angelo a Fasanella.
