The need to extend Via Roma meant that in the 1730s, the seventeenth-century Cathedral of San Sebastiano was demolished, and a new one was built simultaneously. The plan of the new temple is a Latin cross, with a single nave 16 meters wide. The entire complex measures 85m by 40m in plan, with a height of approximately 55m. The Basilica, until 1990, was equipped with a large staircase which slimmed down the façade and highlighted the inclined plane of the square... #tuttitaly
The Cathedral of San Sebastiano, with its new majestic structure inaugurated in 1936, represents a symbol of faith and art in the province of Messina. This imposing sacred building was constructed during the Fascist regime and still enchants visitors today with its majestic architecture.
Inside the Cathedral, you can admire three naves with a Latin cross plan and four minor altars arranged in the side aisles. The altar of San Sebastiano is of particular importance, as it houses a wooden statue of the Saint dating back to the eighteenth century. The main altar is adorned with a work of art by Giacomo Conti depicting the "Martyrdom of San Sebastiano." At the same time, in various parts of the Basilica, you can admire paintings by artists such as Gaspare Camarda and Cesare De Napoli.
The Basilica of San Sebastiano also boasts a prestigious organ built by the Tamburini company of Crema, which, in its splendor, resonates in the sacred building during religious ceremonies. Additionally, frescoes by artists like Filippo Minolfi and Colapietro adorn the walls, conveying visitors a sense of sanctity and contemplation.
The beauty of the Cathedral of San Sebastiano is not limited to the interior. Still, it is also reflected in the exterior with the majestic bronze doors and the polychrome stained glass windows that bring light and color to the sacred building.
In recent years, the Basilica has been enriched with works by contemporary artists, creating a dialogue between past and present that makes this place an oasis of beauty and spirituality for anyone who visits it.
