Stilo (RC) - S. Giovanni Abbey and S. Francesco Church - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Calabria

Stilo, a stronghold of Byzantine Calabria, is a city with a long and mysterious history. Founded during the period of Greek colonies in southern Italy, the city is famous for the numerous "laure" of Eastern monasticism that settled in its territory. The primary testimony of these monastic communities is the Cattolica, a small temple from the 9th century that represents the perfect example of a Byzantine church in Italy.

But Stilo also offers other churches of great interest. The Church of San Giovanni Theresti, built in 1625 and dedicated in 1662 by the Basilian monks to their saint, is another architectural gem.

This Baroque church, internally decorated with stucco, has a beautiful facade flanked by two bell towers. Inside, the relics of San Giovanni Theresti are preserved.

Other churches to visit include the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino, with its sweet "trullo" dome and the characteristic arrangement of tiles called "embrici," and the Renaissance Church of San Francesco, with frescoes attributed to the painter Francesco Cozza.

The Cathedral of Stilo, one of the oldest episcopal seats in Calabria, features a majestic Gothic ogival portal and other valuable works of art.

For nature lovers, it is possible to reach the remains of the Norman Castle, built on top of Mount Consolino by Roger II, through a scenic path that starts from the Cattolica.

Gastronomy

You cannot leave Stilo without tasting homemade pasta seasoned with strong-flavored sauces such as goat meat ragù or a sauce of stuffed eggplants.
