Bari, the capital of Puglia, is a city steeped in history and traditions that trace back to ancient times. Among its many historical gems, the San Nicola district, more commonly known as Bari Vecchia, stands out for its rich historical significance.
The name "Bari Vecchia" was adopted in the 19th century to distinguish the historic district from the modern expansion of the city. Nestled within ancient walls, Bari Vecchia is located between the two ports of Bari: the old port and the new port. This charming neighborhood is bordered to the south by Corso Vittorio Emanuele, while to the north extends the new city, with its orderly and straight streets.
The ancient part of Bari is closed off to the east by the imposing walls that separate it from the waterfront and present a striking urban layout typical of the Middle Ages. Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets, you can admire critical Romanesque monuments, such as the famous Basilica of San Nicola, dating back to the 12th century and considered a masterpiece of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Inside the basilica lies the tomb of Saint Nicholas, one of the most venerated saints of Christianity.
Another notable building is the Cathedral of San Sabino, built between 1170 and 1178. It houses a famous Exultet, an ancient illuminated manuscript dated around 1025. The Cathedral preserves an important artistic and historical heritage, making it an essential stop for those visiting Bari Vecchia.
