The capital of the Argentario is a picturesque fishing village and holiday resort already appreciated at the time of imperial Rome. You can get there along the promenade designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro... #tuttitaly
Porto Santo Stefano is a picturesque seaside village, the capital of Monte Argentario.
The inhabited center of Porto Santo Stefano develops along two ports: the commercial port and the small port of Pilarella.
The commercial port is the first you come to when entering the town: fishing boats moor there, and ferries to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri dock.
On the other hand, the small port of Pilarella is a space dedicated to strolling and relaxing: it houses bars and restaurants overlooking the sea, where you can taste the local cuisine or sip a drink immersed in an enchanting setting.
What to see
The Spanish Fortress, built in 1600, houses the permanent exhibitions of shipwrights and submerged memories.
The modern parish church of Santo Stefano was rebuilt after the Second World War in place of the ancient eighteenth-century church destroyed by German troops in 1944.
Villa Giocondiana, built in the 1920s by the architect Giovanni Maria Viti, is one of the few period residences that survived the bombings of 1944.
Typical meal
Crushed onions and anchovies are a traditional product of the capital of Porto Santo Stefano: a bread dough focaccia filled with anchovies and golden onions.
