In the heart of Sicily, among the hills and vineyards, lies the picturesque village of Salaparuta. It is a charming place, but it is marked by a tragedy that has left an indelible mark on its history: the 1968 earthquake that devastated the old inhabited center, reducing it to a pile of ruins that still tell the stories of the past.

Among the rubble emerge the remains of the ancient houses, the base of the square tower of the Paruta castle, and the perimeter walls of the Mother Church, which preserve the bases of the aisle pillars and the structures of the side altars.

This church, with a basilica plan with three aisles, a transept, and a high dome, had a slender facade typical of the best Sicilian Baroque.

A particular testimony of local history is found on the exterior wall of the Sancetta house, where a small shrine commemorates the miraculous weeping of a plaster headboard depicting the Sacred Heart of Jesus in January 1957. This event has stirred great devotion and loyalty among the inhabitants, who still revere this sacred place.
