Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta - Castellabate (SA) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park - UNESCO Heritage Site - Campania

Built on the pre-existing Basilian chapel, it dates back to the first half of the 12th century. Despite being dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the place of worship takes the name of Santa Maria de Gulia. So-called, by apheresis, because the hill, seen from the sea, looks like an eagle with its beak turned to the right, but the name could also derive from Puglia, i.e., top, peak... #UNESCO #tuttitaly

Immersed in the charming setting of Castellabate stands the Basilica of Santa Maria de Gulia, also known as Santa Maria Assunta. Its history dates back to the first half of the 12th century when it was built on a preexisting Basilian chapel. Although dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the church takes its name from a linguistic anomaly: "Gulia" may derive from "guglia," indicating a promontory that, when seen from the sea, resembles an eagle landed with its beak facing right.

Consecrated in 1138 by Blessed Simeone, the fifth abbot of Cava, in 1988, it was elevated to a minor basilica due to its significant religious and socioeconomic role in the surrounding area. Throughout the centuries, the original Romanesque structure has evolved, undergoing various styles and volumetric transformations until the expansion that occurred in the 17th century.

The interior of the basilica is a treasure trove of artistic treasures. Among the most significant works is the 1472 polyptych by Pavanino da Palermo, depicting the Madonna with Child Enthroned, St. Peter and St. John, and scenes of the Annunciation and the Crucifixion.

Other noteworthy works include frescoes, panel paintings, wooden sculptures from the 12th to the 17th century, and a 15th-century maiolica floor.

The interiors of the Basilica of Santa Maria de Gulia are a fascinating journey through time and spirit. They showcase artistic masterpieces and details that narrate the devotion and millenary history of this place of worship.
