Orbetello (GR) - Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - Tuscany

The charming Tuscan town of Orbetello rises in the middle of the lagoon of the same name and is connected to Monte Argentario by an artificial dam built in 1841. Through this dam, you can reach the destinations of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano.

What to see

Orbetello was an ancient port fortified by the State of Presidi. The Forte delle Saline and the Casale Spagnolo belong to this period.

Walls surround the city, and various ancient monuments enrich the historic center. Remarkable is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, whose rose window recalls that of the Cathedral of Orvieto.

The Spanish Mill stands at the center of the calm lagoon waters, which offers visitors truly evocative shots.

Feniglia and Giannella

The Orbetello Lagoon is a critical WWF Oasis bordered towards the sea by two strips of sand called "tombole": the Feniglia tombolo and the Giannella tombolo, both 6 km long.

Feniglia is a sandy area between Ansedonia Hill and Monte Argentario, while Giannella extends from Monte Argentario to the mouth of the Albegna River.

Traditional dish

To taste the eel: nuanced or golden.
