Volterra (PI) - Tuscany

Updated: Jul 21, 2024

Legends say that the witches of Volterra were the most powerful in Italy and that every Saturday they gathered near the Mandringa boulder, a stone with a crack from which clear water flows. The place was used, according to ancient legends and poets' fantasies, to celebrate the prince of darkness. Even the poet Gabriele Dannunzio, in Forse che si Forse che no, talks about this mysterious but fascinating place... #tuttitaly

Volterra (PI) - Tuscany

Located in Tuscany, Volterra is a charming city that offers a unique experience to visitors. This medieval city is a true treasure to discover, built on a hill and surrounded by the valleys of Era and Cecina.

The double walls surrounding Volterra, one dating back to the Etruscan era and the other to the 13th century, give the city a unique and suggestive appearance. Walking through its streets is like taking a step back in time, immersing oneself in the atmosphere of an ancient village.

Craftsmanship

Volterra is famous for its alabaster craftsmanship, a material that has been transformed into unique works of art for centuries.

Volterra's alabaster objects are considered one of the most essential products of Italian craftsmanship and represent a significant part of the local tradition. Admiring these works and perhaps taking one home as a souvenir is an experience not to be missed.

Culture

The city offers a wide range of cultural attractions. The Etruscan Museum Guarnacci houses one of the most important collections of Etruscan art in the world; while the amphitheater, recently discovered in the area of Porta Diana, was the place where various types of combats were staged.

Both places allow you to immerse yourself in Volterra's millennia-old history.

Gastronomy

Among the typical Tuscan products to taste is the Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane DOP, a cheese made exclusively with raw milk and vegetable rennet obtained from the wild thistle or artichoke flower.

Conclusion

Volterra is a city that offers a perfect mix of history, art, nature, and gastronomy. Its medieval atmosphere, the art of alabaster, the archaeological treasures, and the delicious Pecorino delle Balze Volterrane DOP make it a must-visit destination for those visiting Tuscany.
