Village of Castiglioncello (Ghost town abandoned since 1962) - Former church of Saints John and Paul - Firenzuola (FI) - Tuscany
Nestled among the natural beauty of the municipality of Firenzuola, the village of Castiglioncello offers a fascinating glimpse into its rich history and the long-forgotten community life that once existed there. Abandoned since 1962, the town is now an "island" of ruins, yet it still retains the charm of bygone eras. Built on a rocky ridge overlooking the Santerno River, the village once stood along a road leading to Imola.
The heart of the village was the church dedicated to Saints John and Paul. A vital building for the local community, it, although now abandoned, speaks of a vibrant past. According to Stefano Casini in his "Dizionario di Firenzuola," the church suffered severe damage from lightning in 1784.
After a failed restoration attempt, the church was rebuilt within the village, replacing the castle's ancient chapel. The 19th-century structure, now in ruins, carries with it memories of a community that, in 1841, numbered 97 inhabitants and lived a life characterized by agriculture and small artisanal businesses.
Today, Castiglioncello is a ghost town, but its memory lives on among the mountains and rivers, a silent monument to the resilience and intertwining lives that once inhabited it. A place to explore for those seeking connection with history and the beauty of nature, always ready to reclaim abandoned spaces.
