Viareggio is the most critical city in Versilia. It was born as a port on the sea of ​​Lucca and owed its name to the via regia.


History

In 1172 the Matilde Tower was built, around which the original district of the city rises.


In 1819, the Duchess Maria Luisa of Bourbon had the first dock built; the following year, the inhabited center was raised to the rank of city.

In 1822, thanks to the holiday stay of Napoleon Bonaparte's

sister, Paolina Borghese, Viareggio became a fashionable resort and tourist destination. In 1828 the first bathing establishment was inaugurated.

Viareggio is also known for the figurative arts. Visit the Civic Museums of Villa Paolina and the refined art-deco decorations that characterize the villas throughout the city.
