What remains today of the ancient Tonnara di Vendicari are the fascinating centuries-old stone ruins that overlook the sea and are part of a system for catching and processing tuna. Vendicari beach, on the other hand, is one of the most fascinating coastlines of the Reserve, with green-blue waters and a sandy seabed that always remains shallow... #tuttitaly
In the beautiful Oriented Nature Reserve Faunistic Oasis of Vendicari, there is a place that enchants visitors with its natural beauty and rich maritime history: Tonnara Beach. Located between the beaches of Calamosche and San Lorenzo in Eastern Sicily, this beach is a true gem not to be missed.
Beach
The sandy shoreline with golden-yellow hues invites relaxation and the pleasure of the sea, with a shallow seabed gently sloping towards the open sea. Although initially there may be the presence of Poseidonia algae, which is completely harmless, just a few meters into the water reveals a crystal-clear sea with an emerald color that captivates the eyes.
Tonnara di Vendicari
Next to the beach stand the remains of the ancient 18th-century tuna processing plant, a monument of industrial architecture that tells stories of fishermen and sailors. Also known as Tonnara Bafutu or Capo Bojuto Tonnara, this tuna processing plant was a return point for tuna and mackerel during the spawning season in the open sea.
Sveva Tower
Furthermore, walking north from the Tonnara, you come across the majestic Sveva Tower, a fortification dating back to the 1400s that testifies to the defensive history of the area. The rocky cliffs and small coves along the coast make this stretch of sea perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts.
Entrance
Tonnara Beach is a charming gem located within the Vendicari Reserve, accessible from the central entrance. An unguarded paid parking lot is available for those who want to leave their car or motorcycle before immersing themselves in this marine and historical paradise.
