Santo Stefano Island (SS) - La Maddalena Archipelago - Sardinia

We always wander around the La Maddalena Archipelago, but we move to Santo Stefano Island this time.

Let's move because this island is privately owned, except for the eastern side, on which there are settlements of the Italian Navy.

In the Maddalena archipelago, Santo Stefano is one of the island's granite pearls immersed in a crystalline sea.

The island, for centuries, has been partly unreachable due to military bases. The area to the east, 27 hectares fenced with barbed wire, with armed soldiers and protected by an invisible network of intrusion sensors, is one of the most guarded military areas in the Mediterranean. Seventy men of the Navy riflemen take turns, 24 hours a day, on the checkpoints protected by thick bulletproof glass, an armed vigilance necessary to protect an unlimited military arsenal, from surface-to-air missiles to torpedoes for the navy, including individual armaments and explosives high potential in use only by the Italian and NATO armed forces.

Entry to the Santabarbara is forbidden to anyone, including military personnel on surveillance duty on the island, a company of seventy naval riflemen who take turns in grueling shifts on guard.

The ten civilian employees who work on the island have exclusively bureaucratic tasks. In contrast, only a select group of soldiers can access ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, but they are strictly monitored with CCTV cameras and a remote recording system in Liguria.
