San Giovanni Incarico is an enchanting town with ancient origins that date back to the Roman period. Even today, it is possible to admire the conspicuous ruins of that era, including several houses with mosaic floors, which testify to its thousand-year-old roots.
It is believed that the town was founded after the destruction of Fabrateria Nova by the Lombards in the 5th century.
The origin of its current name is the subject of two different theories: the first suggests that it derives from the name of its Patron Saint, born in Palestine in Incarin. In contrast, the second theory connects it to the "Incarico Valley" between Colle San Maurizio and Monte Cervaro.
Like many Ciociaria towns, San Giovanni suffered a long period of barbarian invasions, destruction, and occupation by papal troops and influential families.
The patronal church of San Giovanni is a place of great interest, especially for the white marble slab inserted into an external wall adjacent to the facade, which bears an ancient epigraph.
Today, the town is an active agricultural and industrial center, which owes part of its fame to its lake. This lake represents a valid attraction for a trip out of town and a popular destination for fishermen thanks to its wealth of fish.
Gastronomy
Among the typical dishes and products of San Giovanni Incarico, the "Marzoline" (sheep's cheese), fettuccine with porcini mushrooms, "Recchietelle", sagnette and beans stand out.
These culinary delicacies represent the authentic gastronomic tradition of the country and will delight the most demanding palates.
