San Giovanni di Sinis and its Church "among the oldest in Sardinia" - Cabras (OR) - Sardinia

We return to the Sinis peninsula to visit the ancient village of San Giovanni in Sinis, a hamlet of Cabras.

We are practically on the routes of the Phoenicians, between the Cabras pond and the spectacular Capo San Marco.

Near the precious ruins of the ancient city of Tharros, there is a small village where life still seems to flow as in distant times. The quaint town of San Giovanni di Sinis houses a historical-architectural jewel of inestimable value, where you can breathe an air of spiritual peace: the small early Christian church of San Giovanni sculpted with particular shapes. Its construction dates back to the 6th century AD., so it is considered the oldest church in Sardinia.

The priority of the oldest church in Sardinia is disputed by

the Basilica of San Saturnino in Cagliari, whose works probably ended in the seventh century AD, slightly later than San Giovanni's. However, the debate is still open.

Near the village, you will find the enchanting beach of San Giovanni, with fine white sand that plunges into the turquoise sea.

In the approximately 30 kilometers of coastline of the marine area of the Sinis peninsula, there are other beaches made of excellent quartz grains, mainly, Is Arutas, Maimoni, and Mari Ermi.

To complete the cultural excursion, visit the Marongiu archaeological museum in Cabras, where you will admire part of the most significant archaeological discovery of the late twentieth century in the Mediterranean basin: the statues of the Giants of Mont'e Prama. A mystical place is rich in history and capable of catapulting us into a mysterious past where there is still so much to learn.
