San Ginesio (MC) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Marche

In the province of Macerata, at 680 m above sea level, stands San Ginesio. The municipality has 3193 inhabitants. Thanks to its elevated position, the panorama stretches from the Conero to the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, reaching as far as the Gran Sasso: for this reason, San Ginesio is also called "the balcony of the Sibillini."

They have probably been inhabited since Roman times, with a cross-shaped urban plan, and surrounded by an imposing ring of castle walls where the breakers and all the defensive structures of the time are still visible.

We enter the village through the Porta Picena, and immediately on the right, we find the Pellegrini or San Paolo hospital. To reach the center, we have to go up a slope.

We see the statue of Alberico Gentili, which poses in front of Corso Scipione Gentili. It was made in bronze by the sculptor Giuseppe Guastalla in 1905.

We cannot help but see how the village was hit by the earthquake, probably in 2016 and 2017, and took on the appearance of a "swaddled village" (my personal feeling).

San Ginesio was born on the ruins of Roman settlements destroyed by the weapons of the Goths and Lombards. The fortification became an obligation to face the horrendous massacres. Around the tenth century, during a hunting party, some lords of these castles decided to build a

fortification on top of the highest hill to dominate the view on the slopes to gather their forces in a place suitable for defense " ... Where civil and safe life from hostile fury could live ... ".

Outside Porta Picena, we find the Remembrance Park, dedicated to the fallen in the First and second world wars. Built between 1925 and 1930 by Guglielmo Ciarlantini, the park still has the decorations of the fascist period.
