The small settlement of San Giacomo rises on the southern slope of Mountain Pic, just above the town of Ortisei, at 1420 m above sea level, and enjoys a sunny position. This village's most important religious building is the Church of San Giacomo, which appears to be the oldest in the entire valley. However, it was mentioned for the first time in written documents only in 1283.
The church is located along the ancient Alta Via Troi Paian, a road that, in the past, connected Venice with the Dolomite Passes. Its position, therefore, explains the reason for the choice of its patron, San Giacomo, who is the protector of pilgrims and hikers.
This fascinating building is decorated inside with valuable late Gothic frescoes. Noteworthy is the Baroque-style main altar of the Vinazer School.
The originals of the sculptures produced between 1650 and 1800 are found in the Val Gardena Museum, where we can also see one of the church's most precious treasures, the Lenten Canvas (1620-30).
S. Giacomo also offers a beautiful natural landscape: the peaks of the Dolomites, the alpine huts, and the woods, all to be explored.
