Roseto degli Abruzzi (TE) - Abruzzo

The splendid marine city of Roseto Degli Abruzzi, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, was born in the second half of the nineteenth century in the primitive village of Le Quote, to be soon renamed Rosburgo in 1887. The charming villas meet along the roads from the sea towards the hilly hinterland.

In 1927 the coastal center was renamed Roseto in honor of the many flower gardens that once populated its streets, so much so that it still bears the title of "city of roses" today.

Roseto Degli Abruzzi comprises a lower part that

develops in a flat area and overlooks the Adriatic Sea and an older nucleus, the hamlet of Montepagano, located on a hill 285 m above sea level.

Beach and sea

Thanks to its vast and splendid 10 km long beach, the lower city is a popular summer destination known as Lido Delle Rose.

The beach has been awarded the title of the Blue Flag since 1999, and the shallow waters of the crystalline sea make it ideal for children too.

Those who love wild nature and accessible beaches can go to the Borsacchio Regional Nature Reserve: an area rich in embryonic dunes and Mediterranean scrub vegetation, a habitat for rare species of both flora and fauna such as the plover, a bird that, with its presence indicates a clean beach rich in spontaneous vegetation.

Monuments and Churches

The oldest nucleus of the city, known as Montepagano, was built during the Middle Ages by the area's inhabitants to protect themselves from Turkish incursions. The name derives from the words "mons" and "pagus," which is "village on the mountain."

The Castle preserves works of art that tell the city's story, while the remains of the medieval walls are still visible thanks to the ancient entrances: Porta di Borea, Porta da Piedi, and Porta da Sole.

The symbol of the town, the bell tower of Sant'Antimo, is located at the entrance to the village. The bell tower remains from a church built in the fourteenth century. The building has a square base in Romanesque style in the lower part and Baroque style in the upper part.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, on the remains of an ancient temple, the Church of the Annunziata was built, externally bare and simple; inside, it is made up of a nave with four chapels on each side.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to the early 1900s, is located in Roseto in the coastal part of the city. Initially dedicated to Santa Filomena, the building is in neo-Gothic style.

Gastronomy

During your holidays in Roseto degli Abruzzi, I suggest you taste spaghetti alla chitarra allo scoglio, a dish of Abruzzo origin.
