Rocca San Giovanni (CH) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Abruzzo

A small medieval village whose origins date back to around the year 1000, where the scent of citrus, olive, broom, and pine trees sweeps the town directly from the sea... #tuttitaly

The village of Rocca San Giovanni originates from Oderisio II, abbot of the monastic complex. He had the castle, the walls, and three towers built to defend the monks and the inhabitants of the area from possible attacks. However, we can see today a reconstruction of the town, which has suffered fires and earthquakes over the centuries.

The most important buildings overlook Piazza Degli Eroi: the Church of San Matteo Apostolo with the adjoining Bell Tower and the Town Hall, dating back to the nineteenth century.

The historic center can be walked through from the main street of Piazza Degli Eroi or by following the path to visit the medieval walls, of which only the remains are visible today.

From here, you can go up through the picturesque alleys decorated with flowers, plants, and particular objects.

The overflows

The Costa dei Trabocchi of Rocca San Giovanni hosts in the sea fascinating and ancient fishing machines on giant stilts wholly made of wood, the first of which date back to the eighteenth century.

Today some trabocchi have been transformed into suggestive restaurants and serve fresh fish of the day.

Conclusion

Rocca San Giovanni has maintained, over time, a rich historical and architectural heritage, for which it has been recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
