The Basilica of San Sebastiano in Palazzolo Acreide, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 27, 2002, during the XXVI Plenary Session, represents the city's significant historical and architectural symbol. Its history dates back to the 15th century when the first church dedicated to Saint Sebastian was built on a site previously occupied by the church of Saint Roch.

The building underwent several transformations over the centuries, with expansions and reconstructions due to the increasing urbanization of the neighborhood and natural disasters such as the 1693 earthquake that destroyed the newly built second church. After a long and laborious process, the third church, with a basilica layout with three naves, was completed in 1780.

The Basilica's facade, 35 meters high and built with cut stone, rises majestically above the Piazza del Popolo, giving the square and the surrounding buildings unparalleled monumentality. The facade's three superimposed orders reflect the late Renaissance architectural style, enriched with artistic details such as arabesque Corinthian columns, sculpted lions, and sacred statues.

The interior of the Basilica, with a longitudinal plan featuring three naves and side chapels, exudes a solemn and evocative atmosphere. The arches, pillars, and circular apses enriched with precious marble testify to the building's artistic importance. Murano glass chandeliers, marble balustrades, and finely crafted details further enrich the sacred environment.

The Basilica of San Sebastiano is not only a place of worship but also a work of art that narrates the history and tradition of Palazzolo Acreide. It bears witness to the skill and craftsmanship of the artists and artisans who contributed to its creation over the centuries.
