Pugnochiuso - Vieste (FG) - Gargano - Puglia

Here we are in the "heart" of Gargano, a true paradise. This is the Pugnochiuso Resort, a tourist center on the coast about 20 km from Vieste. The resort was built by Enrico Mattei (President of Eni), who in 1959 fell in love with the wild beauty of this Gargano coast, flying over it with his private plane.

It was thought the president was looking for oil in those areas of the Gargano, but Mattei had guessed that those coasts could yield something equally profitable. The following year, work began on the Pugnochiuso Resort, transforming that piece of the Gargano coast from wild, waterproof, and unattractive to the tourism industry.

Francesco Trimigno, known as the "Charon of the Gargano," accompanied President Mattei by boat to make him discover the beauties of the Gargano coast. Trimigno was the discoverer of the sea caves of the Gargano in 1954.

During that excursion, President Mattei was especially struck by the Bay of Pugnochiuso, so the construction of the Resort in the 1960s gave way to the tourism industry on the Gargano.

The Pugnochiuso beach is located within the accommodation facility and accessible only through the resort or sea.

A beautiful phrase that I heard before discovering this beautiful corner of Italy is this: "You don't know the Gargano if you don't see it from the sea."
