Famous for the "yellow gold," that is the olive oil that made the economic fortunes of the village, and that was produced in the many underground oil mills present in the basement of the town, known in fact as "the city of hypogea"... #tuttitaly
Even if, this summer, we came to Salento for its enviable sea, we cannot help but go and discover the riches of this land. Here there is no shortage of villages that embody the traditions, art, and history of the country.
Today, we will visit Presicce, a picturesque village only 56 km from the beautiful Lecce and Santa Maria di Leuca, the so-called "Finibus terrae," about 12 km.
This beautiful village, founded between the 7th and 8th centuries, stands at the foot of the Serra di Pozzomauro, a terraced hill dotted with dry stone walls, Mediterranean scrub, centuries-old olive groves, and oak groves.
Presicce is distinguished by its "yellow gold," the olive oil that has made the economic fortunes of the village.
This was produced in the underground oil mills present in the basement of the town. This is why it is known as "the city of Hypogea."
We can feel the ancient peasant past in the identical sixteenth-century courtyard houses that rise in the heart of Presicce. The houses were built around an often covered courtyard, which housed wells and ancient washhouses, in many cases still visible.
Indeed a spectacular view! Today, this village with cobbled streets is dominated by the San Vincenzo Tower, built in the 16th century to defend the town and transformed into a refined noble residence, whose facade is characterized by the diamond-tipped ashlar.
