Porto Viro and his Parish (RO) - Veneto Regional Park of the Po Delta - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Veneto

Located in the Po River Delta, the municipality of Porto Viro was established for the first time during the fascist regime in 1928 with the name Taglio di Porto Viro. It, therefore, takes its name from the place where the cutting of the river was made, the tremendous hydraulic work of the Taglio di Porto Viro (1599), from which follows the deviation of the river to the east, in the Sacca di Scardovari, to stop the progressive burial of the lagoon.

The territory is partly below sea level and includes several beaches and a lot of countrysides, fertile for its alluvial nature.

History

The first settlement in the area dates back to 1000 BC. Under the rule of Adria, all the alterations followed, passing through the control of the Etruscans, the Greeks, and the Romans.

During the Middle Ages, the area underwent an upheaval due to the breaking of the banks of the Po. In this period, the Republic of Venice placed it under the control of the Castle of Loreo.

Here the two Venetian nobles, Donà and Contarini, built their villas, and the villages of Contarina and Donada developed around them.

The arrival of the Habsburgs led to the reclamation and construction of the furnaces, which still characterize the territory of the lower Polesine today.

In 1951, a flood submerged the Polesine due to the breaking of the banks of the Po River. The event caused massive emigration.

To be seen

Noteworthy is the Church of the Visitation of Maria Santissima, the parish church of Donada, a district of Porto Viro since 1995. The building was built in the mid-nineteenth century on the previous church erected in 1727.

The church's facade is neoclassical; the interior has a single nave that ends with the clergy.

The church preserves the statue of San Giovanni Evangelista, a seventeenth-century work by the Veronese sculptor Guido del Moro.
