It looked like a castle with fortified walls and "six towers, one of which is high in the center"... #tuttitaly
Poggio Picenze is a small town in the province of L'Aquila, located at the height of 756 m a.s.l., with 1072 inhabitants.
After the earthquake of 6 October 1762, the town underwent substantial reconstruction works. It was later seriously damaged by the earthquake of April 6, 1762. Much of the city was rendered unusable, particularly the two historic areas of the Castle and Via Umberto I.
The name derives from the fact that the ancient castle was built on the side of Monte Picenze, whose name derives in turn from the Piceni, also called Picenti, who established several settlements in the area around the third century BC.
The Castle was built around the year one thousand. There are citations of it in a document of 1173, "Podio de Picentia," in which it appeared as a castle with fortified walls and "six towers, one of which is high in the center."
In Poggio Picenze, there are deposits of white stone for sculpture, which the master sculptors used to embellish the town with fountains and monuments.
