Once known for the fine fabrics that were produced there, so much so that they were called "bevagne", made in the past by skilled and knowledgeable hands. It is also included among the most beautiful villages in Italy and among the orange flags... #tuttitaly
Situated in the enchanting plain of Foligno, at the foot of Montefalco hill and embraced by the bend of the Timia river, Bevagna is a small village that encloses a wealth of environmental, cultural, and artistic heritage. Immersed in a fertile plain, surrounded by fields of wheat, vineyards, and olive groves, this ancient town is part of the prestigious club of "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy".
What to see
Walking through squares, churches, and palaces, one can admire the traces of the past. Bevagna retains Roman remains such as an ancient temple and a mosaic floor from the 2nd century AD, alongside imposing medieval buildings, including the Church of San Silvestro, the Church of Saints Domenico and Giacomo, and the Palazzo dei Consoli.
Church of Saints Domenico and Giacomo
The church was built on an ancient oratory dedicated to Saint George. The facade features an elegant poly-styled portal dating back to the late 13th century. Inside, the church has a bright single nave, while the remains of 18th-century altars and altarpieces enrich the space. The choir houses a cycle of frescoes by a master close to the early Giottos, while the side chapels boast two wooden sculptures from the 13th century: a Madonna with Child and a Crucifix regarded as miraculous. On the main altar of the 17th century, there is an urn that holds the body of Blessed Giacomo, with the ancient sarcophagus walled up in the entrance wall of the church.
The Bevagne
A distinctive element of Bevagna's past is the production of fine cloths, initiated in the Middle Ages with the use of hemp. Although this industry has since disappeared, the city once boasted numerous looms, with constant spinning and bleaching activity of the fabrics, thanks to the pure waters of the Lattone stream.
Conclusion
Today, Bevagna is not only a place rich in history but also an ideal destination for those seeking wellness through contact with culture and nature. With its enchanting landscapes and the charm of its alleys, it offers the opportunity to rediscover slower rhythms and appreciate the culinary and artisan traditions that characterize this pearl of Umbria.
