Poggio, hamlet of Camporgiano (LU) - Garfagnana - Tuscany

Poggio is a charming hamlet in the municipality of Camporgiano, located in the province of Lucca in Tuscany. This ancient village, immersed in the uncontaminated nature of the Garfagnana, is characterized by a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, which makes it an ideal place for those seeking a break from the frenzy of everyday life.

The origins of Poggio date back to medieval times, when the village was an important strategic center for controlling the surrounding area. Its narrow, winding streets, stone houses, and suggestive alleys still witness its thousand-year history.

In the center of this picturesque village stands the majestic parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, a true architectural jewel. Built in 1952 to replace the church destroyed in World War II, this impressive structure features a hall-shaped plan and a soaring facade that soars skyward.

Once inside, you are drawn to a minor altar that houses an extraordinary Madonna and Child statue expertly crafted in terracotta.

This precious work of art exudes a feeling of serenity and devotion, enchanting visitors with its timeless beauty.

But it is not only the church that tells the story of Poggio. On the side of the parish is a monument commemorating the fallen of both world wars. Inaugurated in 1972, this monument is made up of a serene stone plaque engraved with the names of the brave people from Poggio who sacrificed their lives for their country.

Next to the plaque, a bronze relief, the work of the Livorno artist Vitaliano De Angelis, represents two soldiers about to fall, a tangible symbol of the tragedies experienced during war conflicts.

The architect Piero Pieri designed the entire complex, which is completed by a lovely pietra serena basin under the tombstone. This element adds a touch of elegance and solemnity to the monument, creating a place of reflection and remembrance for all who visit it.

Conclusion

Poggio is a place that combines the spirituality of its parish church with the memory of the fallen, offering visitors a unique and moving experience. Its impressive architecture and artistic details make this country a true treasure to discover and admire.
