Pico (FR) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Ciociaria - Lazio

The village of Pico, located on a hill with Mount Pota nearby, offers a charming atmosphere. The town's name has uncertain origins, but it is believed to derive from the Celtic root "pik," which means sharp point, probably referring to the spur on which the castle was built.

History

The first historical evidence of Pico dates back to 589 AD, during the invasion of the Lombards by Zottone, the Duke of Benevento, who also destroyed Montecassino and the neighboring municipality of Pastena. The official presence of Pico and its castle is attested by a document from 1049 that mentions the "Castrum qui nominatur Pika."

From that moment, the town's history is closely intertwined with the castle, where the first settlement developed. The fortification has a specific historical date, as numerous ancient documents refer to the Castrum and the Oppidum Pica, the latter mentioned in 1126 in the "Chronicon" of the Annales Casinenses.

Historic center

Today, the historic center of Pico preserves a typically medieval structure, with narrow and regular streets arranged concentrically and connected by staircases that wind around the castle. The town walls are interrupted by four gates, of which the San Rocco gate is still intact, allowing access to the town center.

Nature

Pico is surrounded by extensive green areas, nature trails, and a landscape of great beauty, with a view of the Abbey of Montecassino and the snow-capped mountains of Abruzzo in the background. The town is located in the Monti Aurunci Natural Park and is the XVI Monti Ausoni Mountain Community seat.

Gastronomy

A must-try is the marzolina, a long-shaped goat or bovine cheese that takes its name from March when it is curdled and then enjoyed semi-fresh or aged.

Conclusion

Pico is a place that offers a unique combination of history, natural beauty, and culinary delights, making it an ideal destination for lovers of culture, nature, and good food.
