Its two names, in Italian Passo Principe and German Grasleitenpasshütte, are not the translation of each other - Dolomites declared a #UNESCO Heritage Site for the uniqueness and beauty of their landscape... #tuttitaly
The Passo Principe Refuge is located at the pass of the same name, at the foot of the imposing Catinaccio d'Antermoia (3004m). From its terms, it is situated between a German-speaking area and a Ladin one. It is also located at a critical crossroads of paths and is an excellent base for exciting excursions and climbing.
The first structure of the refuge was built in the Valley by Franz Kofler of Campitello in 1952. Disassembled and carried on his back to Passo Principe, it was reassembled here in 2006.
The alpine guides Sergio and Daniele, father and son, completely rebuilt and reopened it to the public in 2008.
His two names, one in Italian and the other in German are not translations of each other. In German, the Refuge is called Grasleitenpasshütte, meaning "the refuge at the pass above the last pastures." This name, therefore, has a meaning linked to the environment and pastoralism.
In Italian, however, the name is dedicated to Daniel Zen, the newly elected Prince Bishop of Bressanone. The story tells that between 1627 and 1628, he went to Val di Fassa to visit his Fassa subjects.
At the time, the Val di Fassa belonged to the Episcopal Principality of Bressanone, and Daniel Zen helped his fellow citizens to pay the taxes due to the Captains of the Empire.
Then, as a sign of thanks, they decided to call Passo Principe, the pass Daniel Zen crossed to reach the Val di Fassa.
Today, while maintaining its typical high mountain refuge, it has small comforts: wooden dormitories, a shower, a drying room, a bar, and good Tyrolean cuisine. It, therefore, makes 25 beds available.
The Alpine Guides, Sergio and Daniele, can advise and accompany you directly. You can also be hosted during the winter season because it is open for skiing, mountaineering, and snowshoeing.
