Alidosi Bridge and Panoramic Terrace - Santerno River - Castel del Rio (BO) - Emilia Romagna

The Alidosi Bridge, with its hump-back shape, is a unique example in the world thanks to its width. You will be struck by its grandeur and majesty. The Alidosi Bridge, which stands majestically over the Santerno River, represents a significant example of 16th-century civil engineering. Built in 1499 at the behest of Obizzo Alidosi, the bridge was designed by master Andrea Gurrieri and completed in 1519, at a total cost of five hundred gold ducats. Its single, humpbacked arch structure, 42 meters long and 19 meters high, is not only a remarkable architectural feature but also a symbol of the power and stability of the Alidosi family.

Beyond its aesthetic beauty, the Alidosi Bridge played a crucial role in the commercial development of the Santerno Valley, transforming Castel del Rio into an important market center in the upper valley. The five internal rooms, likely used for managing goods and controlling customs duties, are a testament to the advanced engineering of the era.

Over the centuries, the bridge has undergone numerous renovations, most notably in 1642 and between 1698 and 1725, to repair damage inflicted by an earthquake.

Recognized as a national monument in 1897, the Alidosi Bridge has continued to attract attention in the 21st century, with restoration and redevelopment of the interior and exterior completed in 2011.

Today, the Alidosi Bridge is not just a transit point, but an important symbol of Italy's historical and cultural heritage, attracting visitors and scholars who come to admire its grandeur and rediscover the stories it holds.
