Along the Valle del Topino, on the slopes of Monte Pennino, rises Nocera Umbra, an ancient village known above all for its mineral waters, particularly those of the Angelica spring, which flows from the Thermal Station of Bagni di Nocera.
What to see
The historic center of Nocera Umbra is embellished with religious buildings of great artistic value, including the Cathedral and the Church of San Francesco.
The Cathedral dates back to the 11th century. Completely rebuilt in 1448, it retains the Romanesque portal on the left side, the canvases by Giulio Cesare Angeli from the 1600s, and the majolica floor of the sacristy.
Next to it is the Campanaccio, an imposing 11th-century tower, the only remnant of the ancient fortress.
The Church of San Francesco built between the 14th and 15th centuries, is home to the Municipal Art Gallery and the Civic Museum. Here are kept a polyptych from 1483 by Nicolò di Liberatore, known as "Alunno," works by Pierino Cesarei, Ercole Ramazzani, and Giulio Cesare Angeli, a stone altar from the 1200s, a wooden crucifix from the 13th century, Romanesque finds and medieval documents.
Events every year, in September, during the Cavalcata di Satriano, knights in period costume retrace the last journey of San Francesco in 1226 from Nocera Umbra to Assisi.
Typical meal
Biscio is a typical recipe of Nocera Umbra: a roll of pasta stuffed with vegetables, sausages, and cheese.
