Museum and Monument of the Certosa di Pavia - Certosa di Pavia (PV) - Lombardy

Updated: 1 day ago

Suggestive Gothic-Renaissance monastery with cloisters and monks' cells. In the lateral nave, there are two singular frescoes: two Carthusian monks looking out of a window, but thanks to an optical illusion, it will seem that they are following you with their eyes... #tuttitaly

Museum and Monument of the Certosa di Pavia - Certosa di Pavia (PV) - Lombardy

The Museum of the Certosa of Pavia is a fascinating place that tells the history and art related to this ancient monastery. Through its various exhibition halls, visitors can immerse themselves in a journey through the centuries, admiring valuable works of art and discovering fascinating details about the life of the Carthusian monks.

The church and convent of the Certosa were built at the request of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, the lord of Milan, between the late 14th and 15th centuries. Initially, they were entrusted to the Carthusian community, then to the Cistercians, and for a brief period, also to the Benedictines. Over time, the complex underwent restorations and modifications, eventually becoming a museum.

The Museum of the Certosa of Pavia was opened in 1911, thanks to the exhibition curated by Luca Beltrami, a famous Italian architect and art historian. However, it was closed shortly after and finally reopened only in 2008.

Today, it houses many artworks and artifacts from the Certosa and its history.

One of the most exciting sections of the museum is the Gipsoteca, located on the ground floor.

Plaster casts of the reliefs from the church's facade and other decorative works are displayed here. Thanks to this section, visitors can admire the details and intricacies of the artworks up close, thanks to the faithful reproduction in plaster.

On the first floor, there are the Pinacoteca and the sculpture collection.

The frescoed Studiolo, dating back to the second half of the 16th century, is a fascinating environment that allows visitors to immerse themselves in a historical atmosphere and admire the original frescoes decorating the walls.
