Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - Urbino (PU) - UNESCO Heritage - Montefeltro - Marche
The majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands in the heart of Urbino.
The current building stands on structures dating back to 1021, and was consecrated on October 19, 1534. The cathedral's history is marked by dramatic events, such as the devastating earthquake of 1781, which caused severe damage, including the destruction of the dome, designed by Muzio Oddi. Despite the adversity, the complex was renovated in elegant neoclassical style based on a design by Giuseppe Valadier, reopening its doors on September 8, 1801.
The façade, characterized by a tympanum surmounted by statues representing the theological virtues and saints, is only a prelude to the magnificence within. The interior of the basilica, in a Latin cross plan, is distinguished by its three naves adorned with round arches and solid pillars. Each altar tells a story, from Antonio Viviani's imposing Visitation to Federico Barocci's celebrated Last Supper, which captures visitors' attention with its vibrant details and depiction of the sacred.
Particularly significant is the Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament, which remained intact despite the collapse of the dome and is decorated with Baroque stucco. Here, visitors can admire works of great spiritual and artistic depth, such as the Adoration of the Magi by G. Battista Urbinelli.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is not only a place of worship, but also a true museum of art and history, a point of reference for those wishing to explore Urbino's cultural riches.
