Muro Lucano is known as a "nativity scene village" for the urban structure of its houses clinging one behind the other in a suggestive scenographic suggestion... #tuttitaly
Today we visit Basilicata to discover an enchanting village 600 m above sea level. Muro Lucano, perched on a rocky spur, is considered a real jewel of the region.
At first glance, you can see an urban crib fabric, with the houses arranged in an arena along the slopes of two hills. At the top, you can admire the castle tower where Queen Giovanna I was killed in 1382.
The oldest district of the village is Pianello. It becomes even more beautiful at nightfall thanks to its suggestive illuminations. In this place, after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Casali population took refuge because they were terrified by the attacks of the marauders who infested the districts. They chose this place between the rocky walls of the Ripe cut by the Rescio stream because it was difficult to access.
Therefore Pianello was born, surrounded by a high wall, from which the name of the village "Muro" derives, which in 1863 became "Lucano" because it could thus be distinguished from "Muro Leccese."
One of the first reinforced concrete bridges built in the South departs from Borgo Pianello. This dates back to 1918 and connects the Capodigiano district. This leads to the castle of pre-Norman origin that Giovanna I had chosen as a summer residence.
The museum is worth a visit. Here we discover the history of the Peuketiantes who lived here between the seventh and sixth centuries BC, the Lucanians, the Lombards, and the Normans.
You can walk on the suggestive Ripe path, at the bottom of which you will find the Annibale bridge between the water mills and Capodigiano.
