Medicina (BO) - Barbarossa Festival - Church of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Anne - Emilia Romagna

The province of Bologna has a small but charming town called Medicina, 33 km from Guglielmo Marconi, the closest airport.

The meaning of the name is quite clear. When you hear it, you think of a "place where people take care of themselves and get medicine."

According to tradition, it would have been the emperor Federico Barbarossa who named the locality when passing through these places; he fell ill and recovered after drinking a broth into which a snake had accidentally fallen.

However, it has been demonstrated that the name was before the passage of Barbarossa, which took place in May 1155.

However, the legend is re-enacted every year on the third

weekend of September. Visiting the city during the Barbarossa Festival is excellent, giving us the feeling of returning in time.

Barbarossa is the historical character to whom the people of Medicine are closest, also because the emperor, in 1155, declared Medicina as a municipality free and independent from the interference of the Bolognese.

In Medicina, besides the historic center with its Clock

Tower and churches, we find noteworthy buildings such as the Villa Simoni-Pasi, where you can take a relaxing walk in Mondine Park, with its pond becoming a favorite place for meeting the inhabitants.

Visit the Quadrone Oasis, within which an itinerary has been created that allows you to observe the different environments, flora, and fauna. From the wooden sheds, birdwatching can be practiced.

Also worth mentioning is the Astronomical Radio Station,

built in 1963 in Medicina. The Bologna Institute of Radio Astronomy manages the complex.

Gastronomy

The Medicina onion is used in various culinary preparations: for sautéed foods, risottos, juices, and soups and cooking in the oven.

Every July, the historic center hosts the Ancient July Fair: Medicipolla.
