Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the imposing statue of the Redeemer and also known as the city of 44 churches... #tuttitaly
Here we are in Maratea. The Christmas holidays and the wind do not dissuade us from visiting this splendid tourist resort on the Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata.
Perched on Monte San Biagio, it is the backdrop to beaches between promontories with rich vegetation.
The coast is covered by Mediterranean scrub, while the high and discontinuous coast plunges to the sea, creating a succession of headlands and small beaches with wonderful sand.
The deep sea beds are pristine and are home to an extraordinary variety of fauna, which makes them an ideal destination for diving enthusiasts.
From the sea, you can reach numerous small and attractive coves. But there are also many seaside resorts equipped for tourists looking for comfort.
The town of Maratea is dominated by an imposing statue of the Redeemer (about 21.13 meters high, 19 meters wide for the arms, 3 meters high for the head, and 400 tons of total weight), second in size only to that of Rio de Janeiro.
The statue is the city's symbol and is located on a large panoramic terrace from which you can admire the coast in all its splendor. The breathtaking landscape is hard to take your eyes off it. But above all, despite the wind, since we have chosen to go there in winter, calm and peace make you want to stay and enjoy the place as long as possible.
Maratea has very ancient origins and preserves the artistic and architectural testimonies left by history in the historical center. It is also known as the city of 44 churches because it houses various religious buildings, chapels, and monasteries, all embellished with beautiful works of art, such as the ancient Basilica of San Biagio, dedicated to the patron saint.
Also worth a visit are the Church of the Immaculate Conception, adorned with precious frescoes, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Church of the Madonna Degli Ulivi.
The visit to Maratea is a unique experience. Definitely to return with a milder climate to be able to enjoy it without anoraks 😁
