Lugnano in Teverina (TR) - Collegiate Church S. Maria Assunta - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Umbria

Lugnano in Teverina, an enchanting village in Umbria, welcomes us with its beauty and thousand-year history.

Entering from Viale Regina Margherita, we find ourselves in the suggestive Piazza Santa Maria, where the most essential monument immediately stands out: the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This jewel of Romanesque art, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, is a true treasure. Its facade features a pronaos with five columns and a magnificent rose window with a double-wheel design, surrounded by seven porcelain cups. Above the roof, an eagle stands majestically.

Once inside, we find ourselves in an environment full of decorated columns and capitals, with an Alexandrian-Cosmatesque mosaic floor. The crypt, preceded by a beautiful schola cantorum, is rich in symbolism, with tendril entablatures and figured slabs. Inside the church, we can admire a triptych by the fifteenth-century Umbrian painter Nicolò Alunno, placed in the apse, and a Beheading of the Baptist by Livio Agresti in the chapel.

The collegiate church is shrouded in a mystery of sculptural images and stylistic preciousness, allowing us to read faith's messages through known symbols.

We can see the Palazzo Pennone in Piazza Santa Maria, built around 1650. With its rectangular plan and travertine details, this building seems to recall the evocative image of a ship's flagpole, which stands imposingly over the village. Today, the building is the seat of the Municipality.

In addition to the Collegiate Church and Palazzo Pennone, there are other attractions to visit in the village. The two nearby churches of Sant'Andrea and Santa Chiara, the Convent of Sant'Antonio da Padova built by the Capuchins in 1579, and the Convent of San Francesco, built in the place where San Francesco performed a miracle in 1212, are just some of the wonders that Lugnano in Teverina has to offer.

Getting lost among the village's alleys, arches, and stairways is a unique experience that allows us to immerse ourselves in its suggestive atmosphere completely. Along the road to Attigliano, we also come across the small church of Santa Maria del Ramo, isolated on a hill surrounded by cypresses. This mystical place, built in the fifteenth century, is linked to the legend of discovering an image of the Madonna by a shepherdess.

Lugnano in Teverina is a true hidden treasure, a village that gives us unexpected emotions and discoveries everywhere. Its thousand-year history and its artistic beauty make it one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a place to visit for those who love art, history, and authenticity.
