It was considered one of the most crucial river junctions in the Veneto... #tuttitaly
Legnago is located along the Adige River in the Verona plain and is about 38 km from Verona Airport (VRN).
What to see
In via XX Settembre, we find one of the five stone lions made by Michele Sanmicheli. These are represented according to the classic iconography of the Republic of Venice: under their claws, they hold the Gospel of St. Mark with the inscription "Pax tibi Marce evangelista meus"; the front paws rest on the land while the rear ones rest on the sea to highlight the power of Venice both on the ground and at sea.
Piazza della Libertà houses the nineteenth-century
Cathedral dedicated to San Martino Vescovo and the Torrione.
The Duomo houses works of art from various historical periods, including a 15th-century Pietà from the Austro-Bohemian school, 19th-century statues, and sacred works from the Veronese school.
In ancient times, the Torrione was used as a prison. Today it is the only remaining example of the walls surrounding the city and is considered the symbol of Legnago due to its historical value.
In Piazzetta San Rocco, we find the Campanile di San
Rocco, the only trace that remains of the ancient church of the Disciplina, demolished in 1899 to allow the construction of the adjacent road.
Near Corso Della Vittoria, we can visit the Church of the Assunta, where we can admire a painting depicting the Madonna della Misericordia and other works of the Venetian school.
In the nearby hamlet of San Pietro, we find one of the
oldest structures in the Verona area, the church of San Salvaro, probably dating back to the 12th century. The building would have been erected near a Roman road at the behest of the feudal countess Matilde of Canossa.
