The constitution of the municipality of Lamezia Terme dates back only to 4 January 1968, following the administrative union of the previous municipalities of Nicastro, Sambiase, and Sant'Eufemia Lamezia... #tuttitaly
Lamezia Terme is a city that originated from the unification of the municipalities of Nicastro, Sambiase, and Sant'Eufemia in 1968. Located in a strategic position, it plays a fundamental role as a hub for the economy of the region, thanks to its network of road, rail, and airport connections. The city's name itself refers to the presence of thermal water springs in the Bagni stream, in the Caronte area, and recalls the political community of the Lametini, dating back to the protohistoric age.
Numerous agricultural companies specialize in the production of olive oil and wine in the surroundings of Lamezia Terme, including the renowned Lamezia DOC, obtained from grape varieties such as nerello mascalese, nerello cappuccio, and greco nero.
One of the main points of interest in the city is the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, dating back to 1640 and located in the heart of Lamezia Terme, in the Byzantine Neocastrum.
Characterized by a majestic neoclassical facade decorated with Saints Peter and Paul marble busts, the cathedral houses valuable works inside, including a green marble holy water font from the 17th century, a wooden choir with precious inlays, and a remarkable twentieth-century pipe organ. The presence of the busts of the popes Marcello II and Innocenzo IX, both bishops of the city, contributes to making this sacred place even more evocative and rich in history.
