"Ivrea, Industrial City of the Twentieth Century" is the 54th Italian #UNESCO site...#tuttitaly
Considered the "capital of the Canavese" (historical-geographical region of Piedmont), Ivrea is located in an area formed by a large Pleistocene glacier, which following the withdrawal, gave life to a place enriched with numerous morainic lakes that are still surrounding the city.
Ivrea, bathed by the Dora Baltea, a tributary of the Po, became a UNESCO heritage site in 2018 as an "industrial city of the twentieth century."
History
The city's ancient name is Eporedia, and its inhabitants are still called Eporediesi.
Eporedia was founded around the 5th century BC. by the Salassi, a people of Celtic origin who settled in the Canavese area starting from the 1st century BC; it became a Roman colony destined to garrison the military road, which from the Piedmontese plain went into the valleys of the Dora Baltea. It was, in fact, the Romans who Latinized the name.
What to see
Visit Ferruccio Nazionale Square in the historic village of Ivrea. In 1759, the square was named after King Vittorio Emanuele but later took its current name in memory of the partisan hanged here in 1944.
Noteworthy is the Castle with the red towers, so baptized by Giosuè Carducci. Built in the 14th century, this castle features large circular buildings, a drawbridge suspended over the moat, and a walkway decorated with dovetail battlements.
Note the Torre di Santo Stefano, built in 1041, and the Ex Hotel La Serra, designed in the 1960s. The latter is one of the most representative buildings of Olivetti's influence in the area (it can be seen from its shape similar to a giant typewriter).
In front of the Roman bridge, built around the third century, you can admire the fountain dedicated to Camillo Olivetti, founder of the homonymous factory, in 1957.
Carnival
Ivrea is also famous for its historic Carnival, a civic festival with substantial symbolic value. At this party, you will meet people from the past who existed. It all began with an event in the Middle Ages when the tyrant Marquis of Monferrato exasperated the city with violence and abuse. Thanks to the rebellion of Violetta, the daughter of a miller who did not want to yield to the tyrant's will, the people rose against the nobles.
The miller, the great protagonist of the Carnival, is still celebrated today as a symbol of freedom and popular revolt.
The 900 cake
The 900 cake is a secret recipe of the master pastry chef from Ivrea, Ottavio Bertinotti. It is said that the pastry chef was so jealous that he turned anyone away while preparing the filling. To taste this exquisite dessert, visit the Pasticceria Balla.
