Isernia (IS) - Molise

She was awarded the War Cross of Military Valor for the War of Liberation... #tuttitaly

On the Molise Apennines, between the rivers Sordo and Carpino, rises Isernia, a fascinating historical place.

The symbol of Isernia is the Fraterna Fountain, considered one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy. It owes its name to Frataria, the Mutual Aid Society founded by Pope Celestino V, a native of Molise. The fountain was built with salvaged stones from a sepulchral monument presumed to have belonged to Pontius Pilate.

The arch of San Pietro is remarkable, a square Gothic tower with pointed arches and a clock placed on the top. Above are the bells serving the church dedicated to St. Paul and the one devoted to St. Peter, the most important sacred building in the city.

Another of the most important is the Church of Santa Chiara. Founded around 1300, it houses the statue of the Addolorata. The figure is carried around the city each year during the Good Friday procession.

The Archaeological Museum is inside the former Benedictine monastery of S. Maria Delle Monache. It contains historical artifacts from the entire region.

One of Isernia's best preserved Roman engineering works is the Roman Aqueduct, built around the third century. The water from outside the city can be channeled at the north gate in the historical center inside a well.

On a hill, just outside the town, is the Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, inside which numerous frescoes depict the daily life of the two Saints.

Curiosity:

It is said that the body of a Homo Erectus from 736,000 years ago was found in the Paleolithic settlements.
