The water made it rich in the past for the production of bladed weapons, but it also ruined it due to a flood that wiped out its forges. Today, however, we can fortunately admire so much beauty enclosed in such a small place... #tuttitaly
Gromo is a place in Bergamo that exudes a unique atmosphere, where you can feel the history and tradition blending with the beauty of the surrounding nature. Wood, iron, and stone are the materials that have shaped this village over the centuries.
The iron mines made Gromo an essential center for producing weapons, which were forged thanks to the power of the stream that runs through the town. Water was the source of wealth for local workshops, but it also brought its ruin. In 1666, a flood destroyed all the forges, causing a collapse of the local economy.
Despite this, Gromo still retains its ancient charm today. Once a thriving industrial center, the village has returned to being a peaceful mountain village. Its narrow and winding streets, called "strecie," are surrounded by the greenery of the mountains, creating a picturesque landscape.
The Church of San Gregorio houses a seventeenth-century painting depicting the village and is a true artistic treasure.
You can admire golden altars, sixteenth-century frescoes, wooden statues, and ancient parchments inside the church. The stone portals and artistic ironworks also contribute to creating a suggestive atmosphere.
