In the province of Cuneo, on the border with Liguria, stands Garessio, a medieval drawing room that has entered the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

A ring of spectacular mountains surrounds the village and is the starting point for dozens of paths that cross the Maritime Alps, such as the blue path that leads from Gaessio to Ceriale.

Garessio boasts the presence of a prestigious monument: the Reggia di Valcasotto, which developed on the site of a 12th-century Certosa founded by San Brunone.

Religious buildings

The oldest religious building in Garessio is the Santa Maria extra Moenia church, with its bell tower in Romanesque-Gothic style and the portal which survived the Napoleonic raids.

Particularly pretty is the church of San Giovanni. It is accessed by climbing a large staircase, at the foot of which there is a pavement decorated with black and white pebbles designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Museums

The Geospeleological Museum and the Historical Archive are housed in the Palazzo Comunale.

The building dates back to the 17th century and is surmounted by a square clock tower.

Culinary specialties

The typical dish of Garessio is the Saracen polenta seasoned with a leek, mushroom, and cream sauce.
