Forte dei Marmi is a seaside resort in Versilia. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, it takes its name from the fort in the town's center and from the marble extracted from the quarries.

The city is graced with tree-lined avenues and villas with extensive gardens.

The beauty of the place and the numerous clubs make Forte dei Marmi a summer meeting point for many VIPs at national and international levels.

The actual inhabited area developed in the Renaissance

period under the jurisdiction of the Medici family, who contributed to the economic development by opening new marble quarries and constructing a road and a pier for transport and embarkation of marble blocks from the Apuan Alps to the sea.

In 1800, Forte dei Marmi was a settlement made up mainly of fishermen's houses.

In the early 1900s, the village was the holiday resort of

many artists, intellectuals, and nobles. These villas were built here, among which we remember Villa Antonietta, Casa Mann Borghese, Villa Bertelli, and Villa Agnelli.

In Vittoria Apuana, we find the house museum of the sculptor Ugo Guidi which preserves most of his works.

The symbol of Forte dei Marmi is the grand ducal fortress in the center of the town.

Built in the eighteenth century at the behest of Leopold I of

Lorraine, the fort performed the dual function of defense and warehouse for the blocks of marble extracted from the quarries; today, it houses the Museum of Satire and Caricature, one of the most important of its kind.

Not far from the fort - the loading wharf used to embed the marble on merchant ships;

today, it is used as a point of attack for the local ferry that sails towards the Cinque Terre.

On the table

Among the typical first plates is Tordelli Versilia; the main dishes are the viareggina fritturina, fish of the day from Viareggio, and Massa, anchovies from Forte dei Marmi.
