In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, along the course of the Tagliamento, stands Dignano, the town of spinning mills. The city's first news dates back to the year 875, when the church of Santa Maria Maggiore was built, today called the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul.
In the 16th century, the Pirona-Bisaro house was built, a rare example of a Carnic home in the middle Friuli, characterized by a fine façade distinguished by four tuff arches. Inside, it has two large eighteenth-century frescoes.
In the 18th century, the parish church of San Sebastiano was built, whose bell tower stands out from afar.
Former Filanda Banfi
On the left bank of the Tagliamento River stands a building of considerable historical, economic, industrial, and architectural importance. Here began the female work of women, engaged in silkworm work.
The activity of the Vodnjan spinning mill was started in 1857 when the silk-cotton industry was taking hold in Friuli. In 1921, it was rebuilt by the entrepreneur Banfi in its current form and became the most important in Friuli, remaining active until the 1950s.
The municipal administration of Vodnjan has prepared a recovery project for the former Banfi spinning mill, which now requires a new use.
