The wonderful village of Conca dei Marini, three kilometers from the Amalfi Coast built on two levels. Between stairways, lemon groves, and the sea with emerald reflections... The Amalfi Coast is a #UNESCO Heritage with 50Km of coastline in the province of Salerno... #tuttitaly
Conca dei Marini is a charming fishing village that develops 3 km long with its characteristic white houses built on two levels: the first is dedicated to fishing equipment, and the second is used as a dwelling.
The name describes the extraordinary location with a "basin" geographic conformation; "dei marini" indicates the proximity to the sea and the sailors' knowledge of navigation techniques.
This small village on the Amalfi Coast is full of places of interest: from churches to natural beauties. Some paths, such as that of Punta San Lazzaro or the Pipistrelli, connect the village to the various towns on the coast.
Gastronomy
Among the typical products of the place, we find the tomatoes "a piennolo" to be tasted in the fish soup. Their characteristic flavor is due to the proximity of the crops to the sea.
What to see
The main beach of the town and the most popular is the Marina di Conca beach. By sea, you can reach O Runghetiello's first beach; on the right, there is a small submerged cave.
The Church of San Giovanni Battista was built on the ruins of a pagan temple, a Baroque-style building also known as the Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, the town's patron saint. From here, on June 13 starts every year, the procession in honor of the city's patron saint.
In the 1700s, the Santa Rosa sfogliatella, the Neapolitan sfogliatella filled with cream, was invented in the Convent of Santa Rosa. Every year the convent's nuns distributed this cake all over the country.
At Capo di Conca, the Saracen Tower rises above the sea, formerly used to spot the invasions of Arab pirates; reachable through one of the best-known and most admired paths of the coast.
The Emerald Grotto, more than 30 meters deep and 60 meters wide, is half covered by the sea. Thanks to the sunlight, its waters take on an emerald green color. Long stalactites and stalagmites have formed natural limestone columns. Under the water, it is possible to admire a suggestive white ceramic nativity scene placed there by divers who, every year at Christmas, bring flowers to Baby Jesus.
Among the religious buildings, noteworthy are: the Church of San Pancrazio Martire, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, and the Chapel of the Madonna della Neve.
The places of Conca dei Marini are connected by small stairs that cross the village between historic buildings, terraces, and lemon and olive groves.
Curiosity
According to an ancient legend, the "Janare" lived here, women familiar with rituals, herbs, and magic witches due to all filters. It seems that these were the wives of the sailors who, taken from solitude, went to a field of olive trees near the church of Pancrazio and climbed the trees waiting for the return of the sailors. To date, some still say they see them.
