Church of the Santissimo Salvatore and the Nativity Scenes of Caltagirone (CT) - UNESCO Heritage - Noto Valley - Sicily

The Church of the Most Holy Savior, located in Caltagirone in the province of Catania, is a true architectural gem tied to the presence of the Benedictine nuns in the city. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, the building is characterized by its central plan and the splendid stuccoes that decorate it. Important paintings and statues can be admired, among which is the magnificent Madonna of Monserrato, which stands out.

The church gained particular importance starting in 1962, when the Mausoleum hosting the remains of Don Luigi Sturzo, pro-mayor of Caltagirone, was built inside. Since then, the sacred temple has become a destination for continuous visitors and faithful who are inspired by the message of the founder of the Italian People's Party, spread worldwide with the cry "to the free and the strong."

One of the treasures kept inside is a beautifully animated terracotta nativity scene of considerable size, depicting ancient professions and life in the past. The animated and detailed statues offer a fascinating journey into the past, with scenes of daily life and ancient occupations that have disappeared.

The Church of the Most Holy Savior has recently been included in the historical-artistic heritage of the Buildings Worship Fund, thus recognizing its artistic and spiritual value. Visiting it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and tradition of Caltagirone, discovering creative and spiritual treasures that make it a must-see cultural site.

If you find yourself in Caltagirone, do not miss the opportunity to visit this fascinating church and admire the captivating animated nativity scene that will take you on a journey into the past, among ancient professions and forgotten traditions. It is a unique experience that will leave you enchanted and enriched by the beauty and history of this remarkable place.
