A few kilometers north of Rome, it is one of the most evocative places in Lazio, a heritage of enormous historical and cultural value... #tuttitaly
The Castle of Santa Severa is a structure rich in art and history. It owes its name to the young Severa, a Christian martyr killed on 5 June 298 AD, together with her brothers Calendino and Marco, precisely where Fortress stands. The location and churches near the Castle still remember the martyr and her brothers.
As it currently appears, the fortress was built in the fourteenth century and has a rectangular plan with corner towers.
In ancient times, the fort was surrounded by a deep moat and was connected by a wooden bridge with another cylindrical tower. The first evidence of the existence of the structure dates back to long before its construction, as we can see it today, then to 1068.
The Castle is located along the Lazio coast and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea, a genuinely suggestive place.
The area was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. Around the seventh century BC, Pyrgi was built, one of the most important seaports of Etruria and the main port of Caere. Later, the Roman colony contributed to constructing a Castrum, whose remains are now part of the majestic Castle. In the 9th century, a vast cemetery extended over the area formerly inhabited by the Romans, which was used until the 14th century.
During the Second World War, after a long period of decline, the Germans used the castle as a secret strategic base.
Today, the castle is open to the public and represents one of the most beautiful ancient structures in the Lazio region.
