Castiglione della Pescaia (GR) - Tuscany

Castiglione Della Pescaia is a characteristic seaside village perched on a peninsula on the Maremma coast, on the top of which stands the Aragonese Castle, whose construction was begun by the King of Naples Alfonso of Aragon starting in 1447.

Next to the castle stands the cemetery, where you can pay homage to Italo Calvino's tomb, which was buried here on 20 September 1985.

From the castle's height, you can admire the port canal crowded with small fishing boats.

Further on lies the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve,

recognized as an area of international importance for its rare ecosystem.

The nature reserve extends over the site of the ancient Prile Lake and hosts a wide variety of animal and plant species.

On the slope closest to the canal is the Casa Rossa Ximenes. The building is home to the multimedia museum dedicated to the nature reserve, which also organizes birdwatching activities.

The medieval village is protected by the ancient city walls

built starting in the 10th century, initially by the Pisans, then by the Aragonese and Sienese in the following centuries.

Once we arrive in Piazzale George Solti, we can enjoy an enchanting view over the town, the hinterland, and the coast.

Numerous green areas comprise pine forests, evergreen spots, woods, and shady paths, ideal for walking or horse riding.

Furthermore, in summer, the town is crowded with tourists attracted by the crystalline waters of its sea.

The castle, the walls, the towers, and the splendid panorama give this place a disarming beauty.

Gastronomy

Typical dishes are chickpeas with caciucco, stewed wild boar, and Florentine gnocchi.
